Ultimately we settled on a newer home (but less expensive) as we realized that we didnt have the time or money to invest in the smaller projects the other homes would need. It has been a great decision for us as there are always things that can be done around a house - even a new one. We bought one. Not too bad. From 1955. Mostly just ugly. In under a year, we did a new roof, chimney, flooring, painted 7 rooms, replaced 3 appliances, gutted and redid a bathroom from drywall up, patched holes in walls where air-conditioners used to be, and the list goes on. IT IS A LOT OF WORK. Thank goodness both Chris and I are handy. We tiled, laid flooring, etc. The only time a contractor came in was for the roof. It will ALWAYS cost more than you think, take longer, and the tiny mistakes that only you can see will drive you nuts. Also, it WILL test your relationship. Chris and I did pretty well, mostly because we each worked on different projects. Some of our friends were looking at divorce by the end of the process, though. Just be prepared, and know it will be a struggle.
