The Great Smell Dilemma

I have terrible eye sight, horrible. But unfortunately for me it wasn’t discovered until I was in 8th grade. So I believe that I lived 14 years of my life with bad eyes, that continued to get worse with every year.

So like a dog, my other senses had to increase to make up for my terrible eyes. Which resulted in this: I have the best sense of smell ever. It sounds weird but I am completely serious. I’m one sniff away from being an exhibit at your local fair.

Now having a good sense of smell has its pros and cons, more cons than pros. I can smell urine from a mile away. So imagine how thrilled I am when Luke doesn’t flush the toilet after he empties his bladder. It makes me want to hurl, it’s like somebody put urine inside of my nose.

Why am I telling you this?

Well it seems my sense of smell is getting better (or worse however you want to look at it). I smell EVERYTHING around me, are you using a sharpie within a block of my office? I will smell it while sitting at my desk.

Now the sense of smell doesn't bother me so much, what bothers me is that the more my sense of smell increases the more my body starts rejecting the smells.

What does that mean?

Well, I first noticed it while using household cleaners, I would use them and then I would start feeling itchy, like I was having an allergic reaction.

Then I was all excited because I was going to start selling candle warmers called Scentsy. Well I bought my first scentsy candle warmer and every time I used it I get all itchy on my head and back and then my nose started running and my throat started itching and got all scratchy and my head started hurting.

THEN, the other day I was sitting in my office at work and I started feeling really nauseous and my WHOLE BODY starting itching and my head was pounding and my eyes were watering. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. And then I smelled it. A co-worked of mine was using a candle, And my body was rejecting it!

Has anybody else had a similar experience to smells? This is getting very annoying; I would like to be able to use cleaning products or candles without my body going in to freak out mode.

Let me know if you have had similar reactions to smells.  And I know the common consensus with my loving family members is that I am a hypochondriac but I am telling you this is real!!

  1. i have never heard of this! but i have had an all over itchy problem since march and my doc said to take an allergy pill every other day or so, and it has cleared it all up for me, as long as i take the pill.

  2. Ok, first off, I believe you!! For one thing, who could make that up?

Secondly, while I myself have virtually NO sense of smell (seriously. great vision, though!), you and one of my dear friends, Brittany, could definitely sit and share your woes. She is your nose twin (aww, like Joey's hand twin!).

I love you, you crazy smeller!

  3. I work with a couple of ladies who have a very good sense of smell. There have been times when someone has come into the office and they had such a bad odor and these two would be gagging down the hall and I'd be the one to have to help the visitor/customer. I think my sense of smell is just "normal."

    Strange....

    I agree with jayma....maybe you're pregnant? ;)

  10. LOL Sorry I have never had this problem. I guess I have a normal sense of smell. LOL

BUT I clicked over to the Scentsy site and I love those warmers!

  12. I can definitely understand what you are talking about. I have the same problem (and have had for about 4-5 years now). I no longer use any store bought household cleaners, perfumes, candles or air fresheners. Sounds like you, like me, have developed a chemical sensitivity to these things.

I can be around someone wearing perfume and my throat starts closing up and my head hurts, etc. It even begins to make my thinking "clouded". I just feel rotten after that. The worst part is that other people that don't experience this, can't ever really understand how it makes you feel.

More and more people are starting to have these types of problems. I am so sorry to hear that you are having them, too.

  13. Ha! I believe you, too. I've got an uncanny sense of smell as well. Almost all perfumes give me headaches, smoking makes the skin around my mouth burn, and I could go on!
