I'm Not Ashamed

Seriously, the episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Will's dad comes back only to abandon him again gets me every time. I'm blubbering like a baby.
I love Nick At Nite

Merry Christmas!

Washington DC

So last week I took a little trip to our nation's capital: Washington DC. for a work conference. It was really great. I had never been to DC before and I am very grateful that I got to go. It is a great city (to visit). I learned how to hail a taxi and that the side of the White House that we see on TV is actually the back. Here are some of my favorite captures of the week.

The Lincoln Memorial - we took a night tour our first night - it was beautiful.

The WWII Memorial with the Lincoln Memorial in the background.

This is TJ. You might know him as Thomas Jefferson

Me With FDR. My favorite president

The Washington Monument at night. This thing follows your everywhere. No matter where you are standing in DC it seems like you are parallel to it. Kinda freaky.

The White House - home of every president except for George Washington. Don't be fooled this is the front - the side that we usually see on TV is the back! I was thoroughly confused until a police officer helped me out.

So, in order to go into the Capital you have to wait in line and get a ticket and then wait a little more and then go through security and wait a little more - all outside. The day we went it started pouring rain - and we didn't have a rain coat or umbrella. Who knew it was going to rain!?!? So I just tried to secretly slip under people's umbrella's when they weren't looking. It worked for the most part!

A view of DC. (notice the parallel-ness of the Washington Monument? freaky)

All in all it was a great trip. We were able to fit in lots of fun things and also learned a lot at the conference and made good connections with other schools. If you ever have the chance to go to Washington DC you should go. I really think that everybody should go at least once.

Unzipped and Discontent

I have two problems

The first problem is a pretty strange/serious problem to have. I have trouble remembering to zip my fly. This is a problem that I have had for awhile now and it isn't getting any better. I do not know why I have trouble with this but I do. The other day I went to buy a cell phone and I spent about 30 minutes talking to the cell phone sales man, walking around the store with him trying to choose a new phone. After I left the store I realized that my fly had been unzipped the ENTIRE time! Not just a little unzipped but full blown completely wide-open unzipped! It was one of those situations where I'm sure he didn't know what to do. You never want to make direct eye contact with an unzipped fly - I'm sure it was awkward for him. I have struggled with remembering to zip my fly for about a year now. I desperately want to remember to do this - but for some reason it seems to slip my mind ( I am being completely serious)

The second problem I have is that I have trouble with contentment. Everyday I want to live life to the fullest enjoying everyday, but I always seem to be discontent. I think this is something that I have always struggled with. I remember when I was in middle school my grandma gave me a notebook and told me to write down 3 things that I was thankful for every night. It is funny to go back through and read. One day I wrote down 1. hot dogs 2. Advil 3. my family.
It seems that discontentment is such an easy thing to let slip into our life. I don't want to focus on what I don't have in life right now but instead focus on what I do have, and find complete contentment in the moment.

My goals for November: 1. Remember to zip my fly
2. Be Content!

Fast Forward?

I'm Back!!

After lots of medication, lots of laying in bed, a 102 fever for 6 straight days, lots of coughing, and seven missed days of work I feel like I am back to my somewhat fully functioning self! It was so nice to go back to work and to do 'normal' things! And it is nice to have my appetite back. I didn't really eat while I was sick, but yesterday my appetite came back strong! I really can't get full!

Last Thursday Luke and I went on a small trip to Red River with his family. It was a very relaxing trip and a good remedy in helping me get better.

We left on Thursday night and before we left I took my very strong cough medicine. It took us 9 hrs to get there and honestly I don't remember an hour of it. I had to ask Luke and his parents if I even used the restroom on the way there because I seriously don't remember anything, even going to the bathroom - now that is some powerful medicine. That was my last time to take that crazy stuff!

After we arrived in Red River we just spent the day walking around the town and taking it easy.

This really got me thinking - how often do we take to just spend time relaxing? Yes we always have our 'worries' and 'things' that need to get done but what parts of our life are we missing because we are always trying to get to the next part.

I am very guilty of this in my life. I am always thinking about what is next in life and sometimes miss what is going on now. After this weekend I realize that life is too great right now and I don't want to miss the now by trying to 'fast forward' through. I want to slow down and TRULY enjoy where life has me right now. Think about it? What are you missing right now because you are thinking about 'that next thing'

"God has made evrything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end.....there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to enjoy themselves as long as they can" Ecclesiastes 3:11-12

Fever, Cough and Maury

I have been sick for the past couple of days.....let me tell you it is not fun.
Fevers, chills, sweating, persistent cough which is causing my chest to hurt, and my abs to get such a workout I will probably never have to do another sit up in my life again.
What do you do when you are too sick to get out of bed. Absolutely nothing, I try to go to sleep but most times I can't fall asleep because I am coughing so much.
So I just sit here and watch all the trash that is on TV during the day.
Currently I am watching Maury. I have a question - why when the women find out that their 'man' is NOT the father of their baby do they (a) scream (b) throw their hands up in the air and (c) run back to the same spot every time. They all run back to this brick wall and either cry against it or throw themselves on the ground.
And think of the children - Can you imagine them 10 years from now telling their friends - I was on TV when I was a baby, then they pop in the DVD to show the friend their moment of fame and there he is with a big caption that says "Is ____ the dad???
O wow.

I am really ready to go back to work.

About Me

Hi my name is Megan and welcome to my blog Tales of the Trees!

You might be wondering where the name Tales of the Trees came from? Well, "Trees" is a spin off of our last name and I use this blog to tell the in's and out's from our everyday lives, thus forming the Tales of the Trees. Pretty simple!

I started this blog in 2007 when I was a post-collge, single gal, living with roommates, living off fast food trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Fast forward several years later and this blog has chronicled my engagement with my husband Luke, wedding planning, our amazing wedding day, newlywed years, pregnancy and now our life with our first son Eli.

Quite a journey it's been in a few short years!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope somewhere in between random stories and nonsense you found something that you liked!

We are the Trees and these are our Tales! Thanks for following along!

15 Years Later

Fifteen years ago today I became a big sister for the second time!! This was a joyous day in my life - once I got over the fact that I indeed had ANOTHER sister and not a new brother (which is what I really wanted)

I was 8 1/2 years old at this time and having a sister that much younger than me was just great.

I had a real live 'baby doll' to play with when I played 'House'. I took her for show 'n' tell in the 3rd grade, and if I couldn't find my homework in school I blamed it on my little sister, "my baby sister ate my homework!"

Although growing up, I often fought with my middle sister (Kati) Haley was so much younger than me that we usually didn't have anything to fight about. She was my 'cute baby sister' - how could you fight with that?

When I went off to college I found that as my life grew in Edmond I found less time to travel home to spend time with my family. While I'm sure it was a hard adjustment for everybody in my family this was particularly hard on Haley. One Christmas break after I went back to school she called me almost everyday for about a week, crying asking when I was coming home - while I felt bad and tried to find opportunities to go home - it was nice to be 'wanted' this much.

Then it all changed......

One day I came home - expecting the usual joyous response from Haley when I walked through the door. I walked in set my stuff down, hugged my mom, and yelled for Haley who was upstairs. Now remember, every other time I have come home I was greeted with a HUGE hug and excitement from my 'baby sister' but not this day as I waited at the bottom of the stairs for Haley to come down it took much longer than usual - then when she finally came down she stopped in the middle of the stairs and said "what are you doing here"

Shock and confusion both hit me at once! What happened to my 'baby sister' who got so excited when I came home?? Who watched America's Funniest Home Video's with me every night at 11:00, who cried when I left the house - Long gone were those days - in its place was something called "teenagerism"

I would like to finish this story and say that it was only a one time situation and she is back to getting excited when I walk through the door or cries when I leave, but that my friends, would just be a big fat lie. Just is a full blown teenager and I am just her nerdy, older sister. She was shocked when I told her that I too enjoy watching 'Life of Ryan' on MTV. I guess she thinks I am just a old dud!

Even though times have changed and the position that I hold in her life has changed, I am still her big sister (whether she thinks I am cool or a nerd). So happy birthday Haley! I love you!

Tom's Shoes

Recently a friend told me about these really great shoes called Tom's Shoes.
For every pair of Tom's Shoes that are purchased a pair goes to a child in need.
It is awesome to watch the video that is posted on the website of a shoe drop that they recently did in Argentina.
I encourage you to check this out and maybe even purchase a pair.
They are headed for Africa in 35 days to do another shoe drop.
So Neat.

Facts, Facts, Facts

OK, So I saw this on somebody else's blog and I thought it would be fun to do.
I am going to post some random facts about me that you may or may not know. Just for fun.
Here We Go.

1. When I was seven I was running outside without any shoes on and a stick went straight up my foot. To this day it still hurts if you press on it.

2. My first dog was named Mitzi (she was a shih-zu) we got her on my 8th birthday, I always said that she was my birthday present but my family quickly reminded me that she wasn't.

3. I could eat pizza for every meal and be perfectly content.

4. When I came to college my shoe size was 9, then my sister gave me some cute shoes that were size 7, so I squeezed my feet into them and (painfully) wore them. Now I am permanently a size 7 1/2!

5. I can't dance. Really I have tried taking classes and it is just not happening. It makes me sad.

6. I have been growing my hair out for 4 years now. FOREVER.

7. I have a HARD time dealing with change.

8. My whole life I wanted to be a teacher. My dad brought home this huge chalkboard from his office and we put it in our my basement and I would wear my mom's old dresses and pretend I was a teacher - Almost everyday I would play this.
I always made my sister be the student, until one day she realized that she was ALWAYS the student and she asked me if she could be the teacher - I said no, so she made herself the principal. I don't think we played much more after that.

9. I absolutely LOVE football. Blame it on Luke. I find myself watching Sports Center and random football games even when Luke isn't around. Sick. And I get REALLY sad if we don't go to a football game on a Saturday during football season.

10. I fall down a lot. I almost always trip going up the stairs to my office.

11. I'm the only girl I know who is picky about what kind of TV I own. I think it is ridiculous to watch TV on anything smaller than a Big Screen. I plan on buying my first self-owned Big Screen soon.

12. I love the Fall and Winter months - but I hate being outside in the cold. I get super grumpy.

13. I have been told by several people that I am a very black or white person. I either LOVE something or I HATE it. So don't cross me if you want to stay on my LOVE list. :-)

14. I cry really easily - too easily. When I was little I wasn't allowed to watch Benji because it made me cry so much.

15. I'm probably the worst singer you know. But I always said that I was going to marry a man that sang and played the guitar....I'm well on my way. ( depending on who you ask)

16. I'm a sucker for reality TV shows. My favorite of all time is of course Big Brother!

Ok The End.
If you really read all of that I'm proud of you.
Now maybe all you people who read this and don't have blogs should make one! So that you can share some fun random facts about yourself.
I hope you learned something new about me today!

Explosion

This is going to be a bit of a venting post: Please stick with me! :-)

OK, so last night I was cleaning my bedroom - and I had my TV on in the background. Well as I'm cleaning I hear a loud POP and my TV flashes and then goes out.

Now if I was a normal person this probably wouldn't be such a big deal- but I'm not normal; I'm obsessed with TV, I love it. I usually don't watch it all that much but I use it as background noise and I definitely go to sleep with it on.

So now I have a TV that is just a little over a year old that plays sound -but no picture, anybody want it?

The TV came with a 365 day warranty - but I don't have my receipt(seriously who knew a TV would explode just a year after you bought it)

As soon as it exploded last night I called the technical support number and asked them to help me - they told me I need to call and get my receipt faxed to me - So for the past 20 minutes I have been calling customer service to get my receipt. I have called 4 times and gotten disconnected ALL 4 times. Maybe God is trying to tell me something.

On a side note: Please disregard the post below, I started drinking diet coke again. I gained weight when I stopped drinking it - not worth it.

P.S. Make that 5 times I have now been disconnected from the customer service line. I am never watching TV AGAIN! Clearly I'm not supposed to.--

Goodbye Old Friend

Sometime during my sophomore year I discovered something wonderful: Diet Coke.

Now, I'm sure I had consumed diet coke sometime before my sophomore year - but it was during y sophomore year that I truly discovered it and somewhat became addicted to it.

Diet coke has been with me through good times and through bad. It goes perfectly with a bag of popcorn, a pepperoni pizza and nothing goes better with Mexican food than a big glass of diet coke. I can tell you the best place to get a Diet Coke and the best way to drink it (in a plastic bottle after it has been refrigerated overnight)

For years I have heard all of the reasons for not drinking diet coke. I know all of the side effects but I could never get rid of this love - until recently for some reason I decided it was time to give it up.

I initially began by just going down to one a day - It would be to hard to stop drinking it cold turkey - while this has worked for awhile I still feel that urge to take it out of my life completely.

So....I finally goodbye to Diet Coke last week - and I must say I have felt better - I can't really explain it but I have felt better - I don't have as many headaches, my throat feels better, I'm not as tired - it quite amazing. Hopefully I can keep this up.
Well I have to go now....I'm craving a Diet Coke.......................

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I love this time of the year.
When students are going back to class
When the campus is filling up.
Young freshman are coming to campus, some anxious, some homesick, but almost all of them are not quite sure what they are getting themselves into. Just where will they fit?
Now that I work at the University I get to watch the transformation of the campus. When I first started working there this summer the place was empty, desolate - and then slowly students started showing up moving in and this made my heart happy.
My office window faces the University and I watch students: students going in and out of the bookstore, students driving around looking for a parking spot, students walking and talking with friends. I can see myself in each one of these students.
I am so grateful for the time that I had at college. I was not a person that was looking forward to going off to college - in fact I expected to move home at the end of the first semester, but what happened during that time is unexplainable. I became me. I found out who I was, what I wanted, what I liked. Not that I didn't know these things before but after I left home and "lived on my own" (if that's what you want to call it) I truly got to know myself. Those years were the fastest 4 years of my life. I continue to ask myself - why did I finish in four years? Why not stretch it out?
I love that I now work at the University and I get to watch the students - I was a student myself less than 2 years ago - yet it seems so long ago. Today one of the student workers in my office called me 'old'. I don't think I am old - but then I think to myself "they" never do.

I don't look back on my college years wishing that I was there - I love my life now. But I am thankful that I do have those years to look back on and reminisce. I hope that my entire life is lived this way. Looking back grateful for that time - learning from that time, loving the present, and looking towards the future.

P.S. That picture is from my freshman year in the dorms. I found this on Tambra's computer and felt it was appropriate for this post. What a fun time!

Vacation Time!

Recently The Boyfriend's family took us on a much needed relaxing vaca to the great state of Montana. We spent 5 nights at a lodge on the lakeside with a view of the mountains outside of our window. It was so great and beautiful. Here is a quick recap:

Long Song Lodge is the name of the Lodge that we stayed at - the name comes from the fact that every night we went to sleep to the sounds of loon's singing. I never figured out what the heck a loon was.
This is a view of our cabin from the edge of the dock.

This is Luke teaching me his natural Indian ways. Warning: Rowing a boat is not as simple as it looks!

There is really no particular reason we are laying in the grass, other than the fact that the weather was amazing and the grass was soft and comfortable. Like I said it was a relaxing time!

This is pretty self explanatory. Us at Glacier National Park. Lots of beautiful scenery. We never saw a bear. I was searching - but never got lucky!

This is in Glacier National Park on the Canada side.

Glacier National Park

The third day we went four wheeling in the mountains - so great!

After our four wheeling adventure - our rental car had a flat tire - so we had to hang out and wait for the new tire to arrive. While waiting we started a little game of baseball using a large stick and rocks - which is the explanation for the picture in my first post. I know it scared many of you. It was just a game - not a vengeful act! This picture above is actually Luke and Clint trying to teach me how to play baseball - apparently I do not know how to play even though I was an All Star Tee Ball Player in the 1st and 2nd grade!

Overall it was a great week! If you are looking for a great vacation spot I suggest Long Song Lodge in Kalispell, Montana!

I'm Here!

Hello,
Well I did it! I entered the world of Blogging!
I knew it would happen eventually - I'm such a sucker for these things!
Now, You may be wondering why exactly I have done this:
Let me explain - I don't really have a reason for doing it - I just though it would be something fun to do.
I have graduated college and I am now at the age where my friends and family are spread out in various cities. So I thought this would be a good way to keep in touch!
My hope is that you will go up to the upper right hand corner and click 'create blog' and start your own blog - that way I can keep up with your life.
Now I know that not all of you will do this (Jodi) but I am counting on some of my friends to join me in this adventure (Jayma - I know I can count on you)

In the mission statement of many church's they state something along the lines of 'Sharing Life with Others' Well that is what I want to accomplish through this blog - I want to share my life with you - and I hope you will do the same for me.
Even if you don't want to create a blog - you can check back here and leave me comments -
Believe me! This is just the beginning of all the fun! I am excited!
